drunk drivingDrinking and driving destroys thousands of lives each year. Alcohol has a way of “sneaking up on you” sometimes and the effects of alcohol can be unpredictable. Some nights you may have two beers and feel a buzz, while other nights you’re almost at ten and still feel unsatisfied. It reflects how dangerous it is to drive while under the influence. The drinking and driving statistics for 2005 were astounding. Roughly 1 million people were injured in drunken driven crashes that year. There’s an analysis of drinking and driving statistics reveals age, gender, and other demographic factors can contribute to alcohol related accidents. Consider the following: Alcohol-related crashes kill every 22 minutes. One of every 50 drivers is drunk. This number increases to one out of 10 on weekend nights. According to the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, there are 105,000 annual alcohol-related deaths due to drunk drivers and related injuries or diseases. Alcohol-related accidents are the leading cause of deaths among young people. The damage caused by alcohol impaired drivers compares to a Boeing 747 with more than 500 passengers crashing every eight days killing everyone on board. Drunk drivers are responsible for 50% of highway fatalities. 65 people each day die on our highways due to alcohol. In 1988, 25,000 Americans were killed in auto accidents involving alcohol. More than 500,000 were injured. The incidence of intoxication (BAC of 0.08 g/dl or greater) for drivers in fatal crashes in 2003 was highest for motorcycle operators (29% ) and lowest for drivers of large trucks (1%).

The incidence of intoxication for drivers of light trucks and passenger car drivers was the same (22%). Since alcohol consumption is known to physically impair judgment in the amygdala region of the brain, obscuring danger while simultaneously exciting the "reward center," we almost can’t help ourselves. Therefore, the only way to resist the urge to just get in your car and go is to plan ahead with a designated driver or alternate form of transportation, set defined time and alcohol consumption limits for ourselves and learn your personal tolerance levels. Road accidents can be fatal and sometimes cost people their lives. Many mishaps on the road are the result of drowsy driving, distracted driving or aggressive driving. Novice drivers are also the cause of a lot of accidents. However, most road accidents are the result of drunk driving. People high on alcohol usually drive recklessly and cause many fatal accidents. Because of this, drunk driving is considered a felony in the US. According to the National Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), any motor vehicle accident is considered alcohol-related if either the offender or the victim involved in the accident is determined to have had a blood alcohol concentration or BAC of .01 gram per deciliter (g/Dl) or higher. The Department of Motor Vehicles maintains records and yearly statistics of all motor crashes and their respective details. Traffic crashes continue to increase in the 15 to 20 year old age group. Most states conduct campaigns against drunk driving and have legislations implementing the minimum drinking age of 21 years old. Heavy penalties are inflicted on establishments that sell alcohol to teenagers. Various surveys continue to be conducted to find out the causes of teenage consumption of alcohol.
